What Could Have Gone Wrong?

I'd really like some advice from everyone regarding my relationship.

I'm 24, and I've been with my boyfriend for over 9 years, he is my childhood sweetheart and it was long distance for a while as he went to uni in a different city, so we only saw each other abou...t once a month which was difficult, but we made it work. I trust him and love him very much, and feel that he loves me too. We have spoken about marriage, and plan to get engaged officially as soon as I finish my PHD next year.

The issue is that he is from Nigeria (Igbo), and I'm from St Lucia, I've met his parents who live in Nigeria and his dad was awesome but it felt as though his mum didn't like me very much. I don't know if it was me being paranoid, or if that's just how all mother-in-laws are. I've also been told by my Nigerian friends that people from his tribe don't really marry outsiders. I've asked him before what would happen if his mum didn't like me, and he said all that matters is that he loves me, and his family would need to accept his decision.
However, he's just come back from Nigeria, and he hadn't been in a couple of years, and he's been acting different. He's always been good with communicating, but now it feels like i'm the one making all of the effort, and he starts petty arguments and doesn't really make time to spend time with me like he always did before. I'm afraid that his mum may have poisoned his mind against me, and I just don't know what to do, HELP!
